SkiWeekends add new resort of La Rosière and four new chalets to its programme

Short break specialist SkiWeekends continues to buck the trend and expands its chalet offering in the French Alps. With new chalets in Avoriaz and Morzine. They are also adding the French resort of La Rosière – an ideal short break destination with new ski terrain added in 2019 and a link to the Italian resort of La Thuile.

SkiWeekends is now offering the resort of La Rosière for the 2019-20 winter season, adding the French Tarentaise region resort to its extensive portfolio. The resort has seen large infrastructure development over the past two years, with a new lift accessing off-piste terrain opening last winter season.

La Rosière suits all levels of skier and snowboarder and is also an ideal family destination, with lots of wide south and west facing slopes and good beginner’s areas. Transfer times are relatively short compared to some of the other resorts in the area, making it an ideal destination for short breaks.

Managing Director of SkiWeekends, Dan Fox, said: “We know that at least half of skiers and snowboarders want catered chalet accommodation and we’re continuing to expand our offer whilst others cut down. The Portes du Soleil area that includes Morzine and Avoriaz is extremely popular for our short breaks, with short transfer times from Geneva and of course a fantastic ski offering. We now have a total of four ski-in-ski-out chalets in Avoriaz, with its high-altitude snow sure slopes. We’ve added La Rosière too – it is one of those resorts that is really making a name for itself and we’re delighted to be the first to offer short break ski holidays to the destination. With the expanded ski area, it has got everything you need, great for beginners and experts alike, and you can pop over to Italy for lunch too”.

Ski Flight Free launches with a new climate campaign

Ski Flight Free (www.skiflightfree.org) is a new campaign that encourages skiers to travel to the Alps without flying. This not-for-profit independent campaign was started by Iain Martin, who works as a journalist and digital marketing consultant within the ski industry.

SkiFlightFree campaign

Independent research* by climate change consultancy Anthesis has shown that travelling to a ski resort by train generates less than one fifth of the emissions of flying. Even four people travelling by car can cut emissions by a third compared to flying.

Martin said: “The goal of Ski Flight Free is purely to try and reduce CO2 emissions by skiers travelling to ski resorts. Climate change represents an existential thread to the ski industry. Time is running out to prevent irreversible damage to the planet. We need governments to make systemic change, but as the inspirational Greta Thunberg points out: “No one is too small to make a difference.””

Skiers can make a difference by choosing to travel by train or car instead of flying. Even if it’s only once, they will still be reducing CO2 emissions and making a difference.

You can find out more about the Ski Flight Free campaign at www.skiflightfree.org. The website includes advice on how to book train travel, as well as information about sustainability projects by tour operators and resorts.
