The eastern edge of the range is delimited by the <strong>River Is\u00e8re<\/strong>. To the south, between <strong>Grenoble<\/strong> and <strong>Voiron<\/strong>, the river flows through a gap which marks the southern limit of the massif. The Chartreuse has more than <strong>1300km of marked footpaths<\/strong>, ranging from gentle strolls to the long-distance paths of the <strong>Tour de Chartreuse<\/strong> and the <strong>Traverse de la Chartreuse<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\n<div class=\"pullquote-extract\">\nThe Chartreuse saves its secrets for those who want to distance themselves from the madding crowd. The highest point is the summit of the <strong>Chamechaud (2082m)<\/strong>. \u201c<strong>Les Hauts de Chartreuse<\/strong>\u201d (the \u201cHigh Chartreuse\u201d) are characterised by cliff-fringed mountains whose lower slopes are covered by extensive forests. They are home to <strong>roe deer, red deer, wild boar, mouflons and chamois<\/strong>. Ibex were re-introduced in 2010, and at the time of writing there are around 30 individuals, mainly in the <strong>Le Granier<\/strong> area. Above all it is a nature reserve, with restrictions in place to protect the flora, fauna and natural environment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h3>Geology &amp; History<\/h3>\n<p>The Chartreuse is a predominantly<strong> limestone massif<\/strong> which forms part of the <strong>French Prealps<\/strong>. During the formation of the Alps, starting around 30 million years ago, the rocky layers were folded and raised up. Erosion left only the bottom of the fold, in the form of a long gutter (perched syncline), oriented North-South. The Chartreuse is<strong> characterised by steep limestone cliffs, high plateaux and deep, wooded valleys<\/strong>. The massif is also something of a \u2018gruy\u00e8re\u2019 with <strong>extensive cave systems<\/strong>; over 250km have so far been discovered. In 1988 the bones of <strong>cave bears<\/strong> (Ursus Spelaeus) were discovered in a cave at <strong>la Balme-\u00e0-Collomb<\/strong>, part of Le Granier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h3>The Chartreuse is celebrated for&#8230;<\/h3>\n<p>The Chartreuse is world-famous for the liqueur of the same name originally produced by the <strong>Monastery of the Grande Chartreuse<\/strong>. The monks are from the Carthusian Order which was founded by St Bruno in 1084. The \u2018green\u2019 Chartreuse is strong &#8211; 55% &#8211; and is composed of <strong>alcohol, sugar and a close-guarded secret combination of 130 plant<\/strong> and flower extracts! It is typically drunk as a \u2018digestif\u2019. In 2014 this liqueur will have celebrated 250 years of existence. The longest day\u2019s walking is around 7 hours, with other stages typically being in the 5 \u2013 6 hour range. The itinerary described gives six days of walking.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving from <strong>Sarcenas<\/strong>, walking through snow-covered fields, allows you to take a path which leads up through forest to a ridge running between <strong>La Pinea<\/strong> and <strong>Montfromage<\/strong> (1662m). A loop back down brings you to the <strong>Col de Porte<\/strong> (1326m), and the possibility of <strong>overnight accommodation<\/strong> in the shadow of the <strong>Chamechaud<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<aside class=\"aside_content\">\n<h3>Practical Tips<\/h3>\n<p><strong>Snowshoes and walking poles<\/strong> (with snow baskets) of course. Given the nature of some parts of the traverse serious consideration should be given to wearing <strong>avalanche transceivers<\/strong> and carrying a <strong>snow shovel<\/strong> and <strong>avalanche probes<\/strong>. Don&#8217;t forget to practise using them!<\/p>\n<p>In the winter the high plateau is relatively inaccessible, and the lack of refuges or other accommodation means having to descend to the villages and hamlets. In addition the <strong>karst limestone<\/strong> hides deep clefts and pot holes which can be a serious hazard when hidden by the snow. Arriving at the pastures gives extensive views of the Chartreuse. A small <strong>oratoire <\/strong>welcomes you to this point, while a broad ridge leads to the <strong>Chalets de Charmant Som<\/strong>. The way now steepens up a spur which leads eventually to the summit of the Charmant Som, one of the <strong>stunning viewpoints<\/strong> of the onward journey.<\/p>\n<p>In summer the <strong>GR path<\/strong> makes a descending traverse across the eastern face of the mountain but in winter this is not advised, the route crossing steep limestone slabs. The best option is to retrace your steps and to follow the approximate line of a summer path which begins near the Oratoire. Alternatively, by descending the line of the route to the <strong>Col de Porte<\/strong>, a broad gully clear of trees can be used to link up with the former path and the hamlet of <strong>Les Cottaves<\/strong>. Here contouring through fields brings you to <strong>Les Revols<\/strong>, where the path continues through <strong>pine woods<\/strong>. A final track leads down among occasional dwellings to <strong>Le Diat<\/strong>. A tree-lined road flanked by open fields now leads to the imposing <strong>monastery of the Grande Chartreuse<\/strong>. The way ahead provides an opportunity to reach the <strong>Col de la Ruch\u00e8re<\/strong> (1407m). Above you is the <strong>Petit Som<\/strong> and behind, the <strong>Grand Som<\/strong>. The onward path descends through mixed woodland to the hamlet of <strong>La Ruch\u00e8re<\/strong>, which possesses a <strong>small nordic skiing area<\/strong>. Accommodation is available in this dispersed hamlet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h3>Day 4: La Ruch\u00e8re to Saint Pierre d&#8217;Entremont<\/h3>\n<p>Leaving <strong>La Ruch\u00e8re<\/strong>, a break in the trees leads to a track which follows a weakness in the barring cliffs, giving access to a \u2018hidden\u2019 valley where a gentle climb brings you out on to the <strong>Col de Lechaud<\/strong> (1704m). The <strong>Petit Som<\/strong> is to the right and the <strong>Grand Som<\/strong> to the left. A short rising traverse allows you to pass through a cleft in the small ridge, which brings access to open slopes with sparse pines, to bring you to the <strong>Col Bovinant<\/strong> (1646m). A long valley flanked on the right by imposing limestone cliffs wends its way down through woods to reach the hamlet of <strong>Le Ch\u00e2teau<\/strong>, where an ancient <strong>ruined chateau<\/strong> stands guard over the village of <strong>St Pierre d\u2019Entremont<\/strong>. A peculiarity of this village is that it is in fact split into two &#8211; one Saint Pierre d\u2019Entremont is in <strong>Savoie<\/strong>, while the other lies in <strong>Is\u00e8re<\/strong>. The route now contours through fields below the forested slopes of the imposing ramparts of <strong>Le Pinet<\/strong> (1867m) which guard the high plateau above. Finally, to reach the <strong>cirque de la Plagne<\/strong>, an unmarked path through the trees leads to a forestry track. Soon you&#8217;ll arrive at the little hamlet of <strong>La Plagne<\/strong>, hemmed in by the cliffs above. If you look carefully on the steep slopes below them, you might see <strong>ibex<\/strong> or <strong>chamois<\/strong>. La Plagne is a starting point to gain the high plateau via the <strong>Col de l\u2019Alpette<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h3>Day 6: La Plagne to Chamb\u00e9ry<\/h3>\n<p>When quitting <strong>La Plagne<\/strong> it&#8217;s possible to contour around to join the small hamlet of <strong>Tencovaz<\/strong> after having passed above <strong>Le Granier<\/strong>. The onward journey crosses the road which leads to the <strong>Col de Granier<\/strong>, before passing through the hamlet of <strong>La Coche<\/strong>. Now a stream is crossed, before a climb through woods and open fields to the <strong>Granges de Joigny<\/strong>. Soon the path continues up through beechwoods to the <strong>Pointe de Gorgeat<\/strong> (1486m). Here a view opens out over <strong>Chamb\u00e9ry<\/strong>, and beyond to the <strong>Lac du Bourget<\/strong>, France\u2019s largest natural lake, flanked on the left by the ridge of <strong>L\u2019Epine<\/strong> and the <strong>Dent du Chat<\/strong>. Chamb\u00e9ry beckons!<\/p>\n<p>Continue down along the crest of the ridge before leaving it at the <strong>Passage de la Coche<\/strong>, to join fields and eventually the outskirts of <strong>Chamb\u00e9ry<\/strong>, near a museum dedicated to <strong>Jean-Jacques Rousseau<\/strong>. A flight of steps leads down to the <strong>Carre Curial<\/strong> (a <strong>Napoleonic barracks<\/strong>) and the <strong>Maison des Parcs et de la Montagne<\/strong>.
