Our chosen route provides an unforgettable circuit around the heart of the <strong>Vercors Massif<\/strong>, a 170,000 hectare regional natural park set beside the Alps in south-eastern France. Even allowing for frequent stops to admire the amazing views you could still complete it quite comfortably in a morning, although as you\u2019ll see, we took another approach.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\n<div class=\"pullquote-extract\">\n&#8230;this is the stuff of dreams; if you simply enjoy seeing more of deepest France then take it easy and prepare to come face to face with some of her most magnificent scenery.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<!-- Error, Advert is not available at this time due to schedule\/geolocation restrictions! -->\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<h2>Into the Vercors<\/h2>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Our journey through the heart of the Vercors begins on the <strong>N532<\/strong> east of the <strong>Tournon<\/strong> and <strong>Romans<\/strong> exit from either the <strong>A7 \u2018Autoroute du Soleil\u2019<\/strong> or the legendary <strong>RN7<\/strong> trunk road taken by generations of families heading from northern France to the Mediterranean coast on their annual &#8216;<em>grandes vacances<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>A few kilometres beyond <strong>St Nazaire-en-Royans<\/strong> (proud possessor of a huge multi-arched <strong>aqueduct<\/strong>, complete with ascenseur) take the <strong>D531 right turn<\/strong> to <strong>Pont-en-Royans<\/strong>, famed for its <strong>ancient riverside houses<\/strong> whose balconies are suspended on timber props high above the gorge of the <strong>Bourne river<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After negotiating the narrow streets of the old cloth-making town take the left fork signed<strong> D531 Gorges de la Bourne<\/strong>. Things are about to change dramatically, however. The onward drive through the <strong>Gorges de la Bourne<\/strong> is a truly spectacular drive and requires care and concentration, although apart from a narrow stretch leaving the village it\u2019s more straightforward than many of its kind.<\/p>\n<p>Along the way it also offers surprisingly wide views of the surrounding mountains, the whole effect softened considerably by mixed woodland and plenty of other greenery. On the final hairpin bend the benefits of the climb will suddenly become apparent, with sudden, near-aerial views across the whole valley (there\u2019s safe parking beside the nearby tourist information panel).<\/p>\n<p>At this stage you have the option of pressing on or &#8211; our preferred option &#8211; stopping overnight at the <strong>Domaine de Piache<\/strong>, which is signposted from the roadside just before <strong>St Julien<\/strong>. In <strong>Les Barraques-en-Vercors<\/strong> we used to take the route signed <strong>Les Grands Goulets<\/strong> but this route is now closed to vehicles. Instead a 1.7km tunnel now bypasses its predecessor, which was often subject to closures due to rockfalls. See this video of <a href=\"http:\/\/youtu.be\/Wk57ciquYTY\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">driving the Grands Goulets<\/a> before it closed in 2005. <\/p>\n<p>The next section is actually scooped out of the vertical rock face as it winds its way around the twists and turns of the gorge, leaving <strong>colossal overhangs<\/strong> above the road. Further down the valley near village of <strong>Echavis <\/strong>we cross the <strong>Vernaison river<\/strong> and pass a sign announcing a series of <strong>five further tunnels<\/strong> ahead.<\/p>\n<p>By this stage you can\u2019t fail to be moved by the heroic scale of construction by which this once-remote region was opened up to the outside world back in the 1850s. Any lingering doubts will be dispelled by simply peering over the parapet beside one of the many parking spots at the valley floor 200m below.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493.jpg\" alt=\"View of mountain valley in summer, near Echevis\" class=\"right-image size-full wp-image-7426\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493.jpg 540w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493-250x156.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493-350x218.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493-200x124.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/vercors-echavis-French-Alps-3493-500x311.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 540px) 100vw, 540px\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<h2>Hitting the heights<\/h2>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>The road continues its long descent, passing through mixed woodlands to the fertile plains (home to extensive <strong>almond plantations<\/strong>) on the broad valley floor around <strong>St Eulalie-en-Royans<\/strong>, at which point we <strong>turn left onto the D54<\/strong> to <strong>St Jean-en-Royans<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>D76 Combe Laval<\/strong> road (a clearly marked <strong>left turn in St Jean<\/strong>) sustains all the drama of our route so far with a few fireworks of its own thrown in for good measure, including a sensational 4km stretch overhanging a 600m cliff face above the <strong>Cholet river<\/strong>. On the way up we pass through woodlands, emerging at a <strong>lay-by with an orientation panel<\/strong>, relating the historical importance of the <strong>local timber industry<\/strong>. The curiously-named <strong>Col de la Machine<\/strong> (1015m) soon follows, with more <strong>fine viewpoints<\/strong> from which to try to take it all in, on the descent to the ruggedly-beautiful <strong>For\u00eat de Lente<\/strong>. As we emerge from the forest, the small family ski resort of <strong>Font d\u2019Urle<\/strong> appears to our right \u2013 ideal for a lunch break on the terrace of a pleasant <strong>caf\u00e9\/bar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Suitably refreshed, we soon reach the <a href=\"http:\/\/memorial-vercors.fr\/fr_FR\/index.php\" target=\"_blank\">Site National de la R\u00e9sistance<\/a> which occupies a commanding position on the <strong>Col de la Chau<\/strong>, a wild and beautiful hillside high above <strong>Vassieux<\/strong>, and recalling the heroic <strong>WWII<\/strong> events which brought the Vercors lasting fame. A few kilometres later down on the valley floor the <strong>D76 turns sharp right<\/strong>, past a prominent cemetery in which many of the martyrs of the French R\u00e9sistance lie buried. In Vassieux follow the <strong>Col de Rousset<\/strong> signs. From here the route begins to climb once again leaving the lush plains en route to the <strong>Col de St Alexis<\/strong> (1333m) and the <strong>ski resort<\/strong> of <strong>Col de Rousset<\/strong>. Once again, wildflowers line the roadsides.
