{"id":651,"date":"2016-05-20T11:32:23","date_gmt":"2016-05-20T09:32:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/wordpress\/?p=651"},"modified":"2021-07-13T11:52:18","modified_gmt":"2021-07-13T09:52:18","slug":"route-des-grandes-alpes-3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/scenic-touring\/route-des-grandes-alpes-3\/","title":{"rendered":"Route des Grandes Alpes III"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p><span class=\"dropcap\">W<\/span>e&#8217;re on the third stage of the <strong>Route des Grandes Alpes<\/strong>, a scenic touring itinerary following the mythical cols and valleys of the French Alps from Lac L\u00e9man to the Mediterranean sea. In this section we travel from the <strong>Brian\u00e7on to the Vall\u00e9e de l&#8217;Ubaye<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Some 340km from our starting point, we\u2019re now half-way through our marathon 684km itinerary, a fact underlined by a gradual transition to the Mediterranean\u2019s climatic influence.<\/p>\n<p>Leaving Europe\u2019s second highest city, it\u2019s tempting to assume that having made it this far the best senery must be behind us. Proof that this is certainly not the case comes as we pass tiny hamlets sitting among classic mountain scenery in the <strong>Cerveyrette valley<\/strong>. A little further along the valley we pass <strong>Cervi\u00e8res<\/strong>, a sheltered centre for peaceful, <strong>cross-country skiing<\/strong> (<em>ski-de-fond<\/em>) on pistes flanking the <strong>Italian border<\/strong> and which in other seasons become footpaths.<\/p>\n<p>We now power our way up to the <strong>Col d\u2019Izoard<\/strong> (2360m), the tortuous route climbing through dense forests of giant, multi-coloured conifers, beneath vast steel-blue skies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"pullquote\">\n<div class=\"pullquote-extract\">\nFor us it\u2019s a startling vision of fiery golds and yellows, as whole mountainsides of larch woodland give their all in the late autumn sun.\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"resorts-ad\" class=\"content-ad-1col\">\n<!--Google Adsense --><\/p>\n<p>Advertisement<\/p>\n<!-- Error, Advert is not available at this time due to schedule\/geolocation restrictions! --><\/div>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<h2>A landscape for heroes&#8230;<\/h2>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>Beyond the Col another hidden valley unfolds against the vast mountains of the <strong>Parc Natural R\u00e9gional du Queyras<\/strong>. Considering the merciless gradients (and the fact that the road wasn\u2019t surfaced until 1963), it\u2019s hard not to be impressed by the heroism of those who tackled this gruelling <strong>Tour de France <\/strong>stage. At the roadside are memorials to Fausto Coppi and Louison Bobet, and the nearby <strong>R\u00e9fuge Napol\u00e9on<\/strong> contains a small <strong>Mus\u00e9e du Cyclisme<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>A further series of hairpins drops through a ruggedly-beautiful landscape of eroded limestone, gypsum and Dolomitic rock, known as la <strong>Casse D\u00e9serte<\/strong>. Further down we pass the route to <strong>Saint-V\u00e9ran<\/strong>, at 2050m, the highest commune in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Next we pass <strong>Ch\u00e2teau Queyras<\/strong>, whose medieval fortress was conceived in response to repeated incursions by pillaging bands up from <strong>Provence<\/strong>. The impressive outline visible from the roadside today dates from much later, however, reflecting military engineer <strong>Vauban<\/strong>\u2019s massive campaign of works during the 17th Century to strengthen the line of defences sited along the vulnerable frontier with <strong>Italy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"311\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-500x311.jpg\" alt=\"The early autumn frosts colour the scenery south of the Col d&#039;Izoard.\" class=\"right-image size-medium-image wp-image-7314\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-500x311.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-250x156.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-150x93.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-350x218.jpg 350w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495-200x125.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/izoard_9495.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<h2>Through tunnels and gorges<\/h2>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<p>From here things close in for the Corniche-style run through the <strong>Combe du Queyras<\/strong> and <strong>Gorges du Guil<\/strong>, where a small lay-by provides an opportunity to pause and look back at the narrow route snaking through <strong>dark tunnels<\/strong> and swerving around rocky outcrops along the sides of a deep canyon. The tunnels were cut back in 1949, opening up what was once a simple pack-mule track, substantial sections being cantilevered out from the sheer rock faces on massive stone arches. Here and there the engineers\u2019 original timber formwork is still visible.<\/p>\n<p>Beyond <strong>Guillestre<\/strong>, long celebrated for its October <strong>Foire des Bergers<\/strong>, begins another wayward ascent, this time past the <strong>Southern Alps<\/strong> ski resorts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/winter\/winter-ski\/ski-resort-reviews\/ski-vars\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Risoul and Vars<\/a>, whose linked domain is known as <strong>le For\u00eat Blanche<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For us, though, it\u2019s a startling vision of fiery golds and yellows, as whole mountainsides of larch woodland give their all in the late autumn sun. The effect, reflected in the shimmering waters of a small lake at the roadside, is like having been suddenly transported to the Canadian Rockies. The military theme continues under the detached gaze of the vast <strong>Fort de Tournoux<\/strong>, constructed between 1843 and 1890 high above the point at which the river valley of the Ubaye is joined by that of the Ubayette.<\/p>\n<p>Pressing on past the elegant architecture around <strong>Jausiers<\/strong> we reach <strong>Barcelonnette<\/strong>, a remarkable town whose truly unique story is told in the <strong>Mus\u00e9e de la Vall\u00e9e<\/strong>, housed in the <strong>Villa la Sapini\u00e8re<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Overlooking the valley is the ski station of <strong>Pra-Loup<\/strong>, while the Route continues into the <strong>Gorges du Bachelard<\/strong>. It\u2019s a tight squeeze, and was a key stage in the creation of the Route when it opened (unsurfaced) to motorists in 1913. The scenery finally softens and the valley begins to broaden near <strong>Fours-Saint-Laurent<\/strong>, before the ascent to the <strong>Col de la Cayolle<\/strong> (2327m). It was close to this spot in 1953 that an Air France Lockheed Constellation airliner en route from Paris Orly to Saigon crashed into <strong>Mont Cemet<\/strong> at 2800m while descending to Nice.
