There are typically Savoyard picture-postcard chalets and steep Alpine pastures where the hay is often still cut by hand. The area is bounded by the <strong>Tarentaise valley<\/strong> to the south, the <strong>Val d\u2019Arly<\/strong> and the <strong>Nant-Borrant<\/strong>, the culminating point being <strong>Le Rognais<\/strong> at 2995m. The main village is <strong>Beaufort<\/strong>, nestling in the Doron valley. All the necessities of life are available here, along with a couple of hotels. Beaufort cheese &#8211; \u2018Prince of Gruy\u00e8re\u2019 is produced here at the cooperative, and it\u2019s well worth a visit to learn how it\u2019s made, and to buy some for your picnics or to take home.<\/\n\n\n<p>The Beaufortain has a number of large lakes: the <strong>Lac de Roselend<\/strong>, <strong>Lac de St Gu\u00e9rin<\/strong>, <strong>La Gittaz<\/strong> and <strong>La Girotte<\/strong>. The lakes are all dammed and linked by underground tunnels (large enough to ride a bike through) to hydro-electric power stations. The Lac de Roselend\u2019s dam was built in 1961.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h2>The Tour begins&#8230;<\/h2>\n<p>The route described starts from the hamlet of <strong>Molliessoulaz<\/strong> (there\u2019s a g\u00eete here) above <strong>Queige<\/strong> on the principle route from <strong>Albertville<\/strong> to Beaufort. The path leaves Molliessoulaz and climbs steadily through pine woods before arriving in Alpine pastures. From here the path gains more height, leaving the woods behind to arrive on an impressive ridge close to <strong>La Roche Pourrie<\/strong>. From here the view over the <strong>Combe de Savoie<\/strong> and the <strong>Basse Tarentaise<\/strong> spreads out before you, with a ridge running up to the summit of the <strong>Mont Mirantin<\/strong> and then away towards <strong>La Grande Journ\u00e9e<\/strong>. The route now loses some height before continuing in a rising traverse to the aptly-named <strong>Col des Lacs<\/strong>. It\u2019s a good time for a pause to drink in the view. The route now passes close to the <strong>Lac de Lavouet<\/strong> before joining a track and path that leads to the <strong>Col de la Bathie<\/strong>. <strong>Mont-Blanc<\/strong>\u2019s startling white summit is visible in the distance. From the <strong>Col de la Bathie<\/strong> you can look down towards the village of <strong>Ar\u00eaches<\/strong>. The path now leads up steadily amongst the alpages to reach the <strong>Refuge Econdu<\/strong> (privately owned) below the <strong>Cormet d\u2019Ar\u00eache<\/strong>. The other alternative is the <strong>Refuge de la Coire<\/strong> just past the Col. Leaving the Refuge, rejoin the main path and pass the <strong>Lac des F\u00e9es<\/strong> (fairies) before reaching the <strong>Cormet d\u2019Ar\u00eache<\/strong> (<em>Cormet<\/em> is the local word for a pass or a col). From here follow a track and then a path to the <strong>Col du Coin<\/strong> (2398m). <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h2>Pierra Menta and the Lac de Roselend<\/h2>\n<p>Time for a break to take in the view. To the right is the famous <strong>Pierra Menta,<\/strong> a dramatic rocky peak which gives its name to a famous annual <strong>ski-mountaineering competition<\/strong>. <strong>Lac de Roselend<\/strong>\u2019s azure waters sparkle below. Our route now descends slightly with the <strong>Pierra Menta<\/strong> standing assertively above. It\u2019s also possible to take a more contouring route via the <strong>Lac d\u2019Amour<\/strong>, passing right next to the <strong>Pierra Menta<\/strong>, although with a very steep initial descent the far side. Once on the <strong>Col du Bresson<\/strong> (2469m) you can see the refuge on a small promontory. The path cuts across the hillside and a final small climb brings you to the <strong>Refuge du Presset<\/strong>. The route follows the valley with mountain ridges standing sentinel to either side; keep a look out now for <strong>chamois<\/strong> or <strong>bouquetin<\/strong>. Reaching a small water intake, pick up a track which contours the hillside to the <strong>Cormet de Roselend<\/strong>, one of the celebrated cols of the <strong>Tour de France<\/strong> and part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/summer\/scenic-touring\/route-des-grandes-alpes-1\/\" target=\"_blank\">Route des Grandes Alpes<\/a>. The road to the left leads back down to <strong>Albertville<\/strong> or onward to <strong>Bourg St Maurice<\/strong>. Crossing the road, we pick up a track which soon peters out, while we make our way up to the <strong>Col de la Sauce<\/strong> (2307m) and avoid following the road to the <strong>Plan du Lai<\/strong>. From the <strong>Col de la Sauce<\/strong> follow close to the crest of the <strong>Cr\u00eate des Gittes<\/strong> on a path hewn out of the rock before <strong>WWI<\/strong> by soldiers who left a lasting testimony to their endeavours with engraved memorials. The night\u2019s stop is now in sight &#8211; the <strong>Refuge du Col de la Croix du Bonhomme<\/strong>, a large modern refuge which also serves the <strong>Tour du Mont-Blanc<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content-right\">\n<h2>Among peaks and glaciers<\/h2>\n<p>The route is now common with that of the <strong>Tour du Mont-Blanc<\/strong>, passing the<strong> Col du Bonhomme<\/strong> before descending towards <strong>La Balme<\/strong>. However before reaching <strong>La Balme<\/strong> a path now diverges passing below the <strong>Col de la Fen\u00eatre<\/strong>, the <strong>Aiguille de Roselette<\/strong> and opposite, the satellite peaks and glaciers of <strong>Mont Blanc<\/strong> dominating the skyline. After the path crosses a boulder-field it starts to climb again and soon reaches the <strong>Chalets de Roselette<\/strong> (refuge) below the <strong>Col du Joly<\/strong> with the valley of <strong>Les Contamines<\/strong> below.<\/p>\n<p>Follow the broad ridge briefly before following a path which clings to the hillside below the <strong>Aiguille Croche<\/strong> and comes out on the ridge again near the <strong>Col de V\u00e9ry<\/strong>. The route now goes via (optional) or close to the <strong>Mont de Vores<\/strong> and then <strong>Mont Clocher<\/strong> following the broad whale-back ridge overlooking the <strong>Val d\u2019Arly<\/strong> and the valley of <strong>Hauteluce<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"content-container\">\n<div class=\"inprofile2col\">\n<div class=\"content\">\n<h2>Les Saisies: an Olympic host<\/h2>\n<p>The final section goes via the <strong>Chard du Beurre<\/strong>, passing above the resort of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountainpassions.com\/winter\/ski-resort-reviews\/ski-les-saisies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Les Saisies<\/a>, to the <strong>Chalet de Lachat<\/strong>. <strong>Les Saisies<\/strong> hosted the biathlon and other cross-country skiing events during the 1992 <strong>Winter Olympics<\/strong>.
