Le Chalet Chovettaz
A luxury chalet hotel in Les Contamines Montjoie in the Mont Blanc region of the French Alps was built in 1984 by local developers Grosset Janin. MountainPassions looks at how the owners, an English family, fell in love with the area and made the move to France.

The Chalet Chovettaz, a welcoming chalet ofering chambres d'hôtes in the ski resort of Les Contamines Montjoie looks as though it has been part of the landscape for generations. Which is just as it should be. All the more surprising, then, that it was created just four years ago. We asked the owners about their experiences.
In 2004 Christopher and Fiona Hopkinson sold their grade II listed house in the UK and moved to the French Alps with their children. While Christopher continues his career as a pilot, Fiona now runs the chalet as a business and has six guest bedrooms accommodating up to 14 guests at any one time. The chalet was specially designed and built for the Hopkinsons by the renowned Savoyard chalet constructor Grosset Janin after the family had become enchanted by Les Contamines. Fiona recounts how they found the area and set the wheels in motion. “We have holidayed in France for years and used to own a property in Burgundy. When we were staying there four years ago it was desperately hot. We decided to go to the Alps to cool down and found Les Contamines quite by accident.” Just moments before they were due to leave they discovered a plot of land for sale. The developers were asked to take on the build.

L-R: The interior volumes are exceptional and furnishings combine both traditional and contemporary influences; a privileged setting close to Mont Blanc.
This was in August 2003 and by the time the purchase had been agreed in October plans had already been drawn up by the developer. The property received planning permission in December and construction began in March, once the snow had melted. Fiona and Christopher describe the results as “phenomenal” and the Chalet Chovettaz opened for business on the 18th December 2004, with the family living in a self-contained 3 bedroom private apartment. The guest area contains a further 6 luxury en-suite bedrooms and there is also a sauna, spa and fitness area on the ground floor. The first floor has a large sunny lounge plus a dining room, the lounge and most of the rooms enjoying wonderful mountain views. Les Contamines Montjoie is a charming, down-to-earth authentic village which lies within one hour’s drive from Geneva airport.
Grosset Janin are one of the most respected construction companies in the Alps. They specialise in bespoke chalets built from natural materials and to designs which draw upon the traditional mountain styles of architecture which have been present in the local landscapes since the 16th Century.
